Professor Leung Sun (Ming) Leung
(1936 – 1990)
Born in Taipo, Hong Kong, Professor Ming (Leung Sun) Leung obtained his PhD in Chemical Engineering (Cambridge University) in 1961. After a period of teaching at University of Malaya, and working at Malaya Acid Works, Prof Ming Leung joined the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of Queensland in 1967, achieving a personal chair in 1979. He played a leading role in the chemical engineering profession in Australia and in 1986 was appointed Chief of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Division of fossil fuels. To commemorate Prof Leung’s contribution, the global professional organisation of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) established the Ming Leung Scholarship after his death. The scholarship continues to this day and aims to encourage and support a meritorious 3rd year student studying the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) program.
Apart from his significant contribution in his profession of Chemical Engineering, Prof Ming Leung was a pioneer in the Queensland Chinese community social movement. In 1980, with a group of friends interested in radio broadcasting, Prof Leung established the Chinese Ethnic Broadcasting Association of Queensland (Radio 4EB Chinese Group, Brisbane) and became the Founding President of this association. It is one of the oldest Chinese community organisations in Queensland.
In 1984, Australia experienced a wave of racial tension after historian Professor Geoffrey Blainey’s controversial speech on Australian immigration policy. In response, Prof Leung commenced and chaired the Asian Australian Action Committee. The purpose of the Committee was to raise the profile of Asian Australians, promote participation of Asian Australians in public affairs, and oppose any racial, cultural and religious discriminations.
Prof Ming Leung met his wife Fuk Ching Theresa (nee Chu) through the Chinese Association in London while he was studying and Theresa was doing Nursing training in London. Coincidentally, Theresa was also born in Taipo, Hong Kong, and Ming was delivered by her first mother who was the local midwife in the district. They married in Cambridge in December 1960. Prof Ming Leung and Theresa had three children, Kam, Ann and Ming Junior.
In a relatively short life span, Professor Ming Leung’s achievements were outstanding. He was known for his outgoing personality, lateral thinking, generosity and ever present sense of humour.
