Dr Jian Zhou 周健博士
(1957 – 1999)
A virologist and cancer researcher, who with fellow researcher Professor Ian Frazer, invented Gardasil and Cervarix, the world's first cervical cancer vaccines.
Dr Jian Zhou was born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province in China in 1957.
An MBBS graduate of Wenzhou Medical School, China in 1982, Dr Zhou earned his Master Degree of Medical Pathology at Zhejiang Medical University, China in 1984 and his PhD at Henan Medical University, China in 1987. He was awarded a Doctor of Medicine degree by the University of Queensland in 1994.
一位病毒學家和癌症研究人員，與Ian Frazer教授一起研發了世界上第一批子宮頸癌疫苗 Gardasil 和 Cervarix。
周健博士1957年出生於中國浙江省杭州市。
周博士於 1982 年畢業於中國溫州醫學院，於 1984 年在中國浙江醫科大學獲得醫學病理學碩士學位，並於 1987 年在中國河南醫科大學獲得博士學位。1994 年他獲昆士蘭大學頒發醫學博士學位。
Dr Zhou worked as a postdoctoral research at Beijing Medical University, before moving to University of Cambridge, United Kingdom in 1988. In 1990 Prof Frazer convinced Dr Zhou to join him at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, as a senior research fellow. He became the Lions Principal Research Fellow and head of the Papillomavirus Virology Unit in the University’s Centre for Immunology and Cancer Research at Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane in 1999.
The cooperation between Dr Zhou and Prof Ian Frazer eventually lead to the creation of a vaccine that completely protects unexposed women against four HPV strains responsible for 70% of cervical cancers, which kill about 250,000 women annually.
周博士在北京醫科大學從事博士後研究，之後於 1988 年轉往英國劍橋大學。1990 年，Frazer教授說服周博士加入他在布里斯班昆士蘭大學的工作，擔任高級研究員。 他於 1999 年成為位於布里斯班雅麗珊郡主醫院的大學免疫學和癌症研究中心的獅子會首席研究員及乳頭瘤病毒部門負責人。
周博士和 Ian Frazer 教授之間的合作最終導致研發出一種疫苗，可以完全保護未受感染的女性免受人類乳頭狀瘤病毒( HPV) 四種病毒株的侵害，這些病毒株導致 百分之七十的子宮頸癌。每年約有 250,000 名女性因子宮頸癌死亡。
In March 1999, Dr Zhou passed away in Hangzhou at the age of 42. In 2008, Dr Zhou's contribution to his efforts in research, including his work with the cervical cancer vaccine, were formally recognised with a commemorative service at Queensland Parliament House attended by over 300 people, and included a written tribute from the Australian Prime Minister of the time, Kevin Rudd in Brisbane, Australia.
Dr Zhou was married to Dr Xiao Yi Sun and they had a son Andreas Zhou.
The Dr Jian Zhou Memorial Scholarship (University of Queensland) was established by Dr Xiao-Yi Sun and Andreas Zi-Xi Zhou (wife and Son) in memory of Dr Jian Zhou, to support higher degree by University of Queensland research students in the area of health and medicine.
1999 年 3 月，周博士在杭州逝世，享年 42 歲。2008 年，在澳大利亞布里斯班昆士蘭州議會大樓舉行的紀念儀式正式承認了周博士在研究方面的貢獻，包括他在子宮頸癌疫苗方面的工作。 超過 300 人出席，包括時任澳大利亞總理陸克文 (Kevin Rudd) 的書面悼念。
周博士與孫小依醫生結婚，他們育有一個兒子 Andreas Zhou (周子晞)。
周建博士紀念獎學金（昆士蘭大學）由孫小依醫生和周子熙（妻子和兒子）為紀念周建博士而設立，以支持昆士蘭大學的研究生獲得健康和醫學更高的學位。
